Capacity Building Programme For Women
The Meghalaya State Commission for Women in collaboration with the Support Group for Women had organized 2 (two) Capacity Building Programme for Women who are representatives of the Seng Kynthei (Women’s Organisation) on the 25th September 2017 at Upper Shillong, on the 4th October 2017 at Nongmynsong Shillong. This programme was supported financially by the Department of Social Welfare, Meghalaya, Shillong.
The objective of the programme was to sensitize them on various women related issues, empowering them with information on rights, legislations and responsibilities so as to enable them to apply whatever they have learned in handling cases related to crimes against women and in sensitizing men and women in the community. Resource Persons for the programmes were from North East Network and from the Commission.
In Garo Hills, the Commission had organised the Capacity Building Programme on the 14th December 2017 at Tura, West Garo Hills. Participants from selected from different Women’s Organisation from the Five Districts in Garo Hills. The session was very interactive and participatory. Resource persons included Dr.Caroline Marak, Social Activist, District Social Welfare Officer, South Garo Hills, Convenor, Support Group for Women and from the Commission.
Key Recommendation
- Participants responded very well to the training programmes and pointed out such that sensitization programme at the community level is urgently required for men. They also suggested that Gender awareness and capacity building through gender sensitisation in the community should be organized covering other vulnerable areas in the State.
Training on Home Stay
The Meghalaya State Commission for Women had organized Training on Home Stay for Women on 18th July 2018 at NEC, Secretariat, Shillong which was a joint initiative of the National Commission for Women, New Delhi and Airbnb.
The objective was to
- Discuss the idea of home stays and home sharing and it social, cultural and economic benefits for families and communities
- To introduce Airbnb’s platform and assist the participants to create accounts on Airbnb to get started on their new business
- Share Airbnb’s learning on hospitality standards for a successful home sharing business
More in-depth training will be organised for the participants to help them get fully acquainted with the platform and help address their queries as they become more familiar with its functionalities.
Capacity Building of Community Members Especially Members From Traditional Bodies/Seng Kynthei (Women’s Organization) & Village Level Awareness Programmes on Constitutional and Legal Rights of Women
Women
With the support of the Department of Justice, Ministry of Law & Justice, Government of India, the Commission had implemented the project “Legal Awareness Programmes & Capacity Building of Community Members especially members from Traditional Bodies/Seng Kynthei(Women’s Organization) on Constitutional and legal rights of Women” in seven districts in the State of Meghalaya. The Commission had conducted Capacity Building Programme on the Constitutional and Legal Rights of Women in Shillong in the seven Districts in the State of Meghalaya. As a follow up to the programme, the trained participants were given the task and responsibility to conduct awareness programme at the village level on legal rights of women in the selected Districts where the trainings have been conducted. This project focused on creating legal awareness to ensure that women seek and demands rights and justice. The other objective of the programme is to also provide a space and platform to the trained participants to apply whatever they have learned and put into effect their facilitation skills and create awareness at the community level.
Some of the trained participants gave excellent deliberations and showed great confidence during their sessions in the village level awareness programmes. From the assessment, the trainers that have been identified will be given more in-depth training on other related issues.
